How to Become a Makeup Artist in South Wales

1. Get an accredited qualification

An accredited certificate shows clients you've been properly trained, and it's what insurers look for when you apply for professional cover. Look for courses taught to National Occupational Standards and certified by a recognised body such as Beauty Industry Approval (BIA).

2. Choose the right course for you

3. Build your kit gradually

You don't need every product on day one. Start with quality base products in a good range of shades, a core set of brushes and strict hygiene essentials, then grow your kit as you learn what your clients ask for.

4. Practise and build a portfolio

Clients book from photos of your work. Practise on friends and family, photograph every look in good natural light, and post consistently. Our 3-day course includes model practice sessions, and additional model days are available after you qualify.

5. Get insured and start taking clients

Once you hold your certificate you can arrange professional insurance and start charging for your work. Prom season, weddings and festival season are great times to build a local client base across Caerphilly, Cardiff, Newport and the surrounding areas.

6. Keep learning

The best artists never stop training. Masterclasses and one-to-one lessons help you refine specific skills, and adding brow and lash treatments lets you offer clients more.
